This story happened exactly two years ago. I just saw my dentist a week ago. I see him again next week. He has to replace a couple of fillings. Life on the run does go on.

SPENT WEEKEND IN PARIS FOR A FUNERAL - Last week Mort Rosenblum wrote that he was "set upon" by some young immigrant types at our mutual local train station - Les Arcs-Draguignan. Turned out they didn't harm him a bit. Rather they helped him schlep his suitcases and a cat carrier down and up the steep stupid steps we have at our station.

So last week I am riding the evening TGV (speed) train back from Paris on Monday. All I could think about ( The train was arriving at 9:45 pm.) was how in the hell I would get my suitcase down and up those steps and when and if I did, how would I dare walk to the back parking lot where I'd left my car on Thursday. I would have to hike in pitch darkness up a long slope and then navigate a sort of lumpy stairs with clumps of bushes on either side. I was worried. Maybe those same people who had "set upon" my friend Mort Rosenblum would "set upon" me. And not with in mind to help me carry my suitcases. As some of us passengers were preparing to leave the train, I spied a a distinguished tall man with a mustache standing near the train doors and casually asked if he was getting off at Les Arcs-Draguignan station. He said "yes". So I asked if he was going to take the bus home to Draguignan where I live.

He said "no". He was being picked up. I explained how afraid I was to walk up the dark path. He thought for a minute and then said. "If you don't have too much luggage, we can drive you to your car in our car." Train pulled in and he got off and went down and up those damnable stairs with his own too much luggage. I stood alone on the quai desperately looking for a strong man to carry my suitcase down and up.

I panicked a bit. But up behind me came a very strong tall burly blond man. "Excuse me sir, can you help me with my luggage?" He didn't understand French. And he had quite a big bag himself. I tried English. He grabbed my bag and hauled it (and his own) down those nasty steps and back up the other side. "I have a bad back." he quipped. I asked where he came from as he was speaking to me in British English. "Norway." he said.

Europe's like that. People appear out of nowhere from Norway or Poland or Lithuania. No more borders keeps thing pretty fluid over here. I raced away from Mr Norway apologizing because I had to catch up with my rescuer/savior from the train to be driven to my car.

Turns out the mustached man and his ride had come to find me. They were waiting for me in the car in front of the station doors. We piled, all four, Frank (the mustachioed train man) Natalie and Christophe (her boyfriend) into a small red Renault Clio. I held my suitcase on my lap. We get to my car and it is drowning in dew - in and out sopping wet from condensation. I got in. It started. A victory cry went up. I thanked everyone and asked for their email so I could send them a copy of my book."Frank is my boss, Nathalie said, gesturing at the train man with the mustache in the back seat
"Boss? Really? What does he do?"

Nathalie replied, "Dentist. I am his dental technician." "

"OMG" I said. "I have been hunting for a dentist for months. How amazing to have found my new dentist in the train."

Nathalie then gave me a pen with her boss's name and email address on it. It's a ball point pen with a flashlight at the end. Super cool and discreet. White and silver. I stick it in my pocket and kiss them goodbye. Get home. Once inside the door of my building, I press the button to light the stairs to the first floor where I live. OH NO. Damn thing is out of order. The staircase air is dense black. I will never make it up those steps in the total darkness with my suitcase. What can I do?

Then, O Miracle! I remembered Nathalie's pen with the flashlight was inside in my very own pocket. That flashlight magnanimously lit my way and I made it upstairs without having heart failure.

Some people are really nice. And... there are no co-incidences. Just fate. I have my first dental appointment the 16th of December. What could be better than that?

PS. The story happened two years ago. Frank is still my dentist. He's a talented musician too. Plays the bass in a jazz group. Cool people in this neck of the woods. SW©2018
